Highlights from the 12-13-08 Medical Staff Meeting

The meeting opened a bit later, due to several medical members discussing certain... 'medical problems'. Yes, let's keep it at that. However, when we did begin, Dr. Juran announced that there were only a few things to be said.

* Dr. Juran asked every medical member to visit at least one of the balls. They're saturday 20th at 2 PM and 10 PM SLT, and sunday 21st at 9 AM SLT. Let's make sure we have a good medical deligation showing up, shall we?

* The good CMO also called forward Arno Menkez. Due to his extra-ordinary work within Medical, Mr. Menkez was promoted to Petty Officer 1st class. Congratulations, Arno!

* Doctor Weatherwax reported that he's working closely with Tactical in order to bring back the Medical experts: the ones who heal the injured participants of the Tactical events. There are some problems with the current version, but once Tactical updates to a new version, there will be more opportunities to use dermal regenerators and other medical gadgets to heal those unfortunate souls.

* Another fortunous event happened during this meeting: Ensign Kieran Braveheart was finally given his Medical diploma, and could, from now on, call himself a doctor. Congratulations, Doctor Braveheart!

* And finally, Doctor Bourne reported on the status of MERSI: There will most likely be a training every wednesday afternoon. People are encouraged to contact Doctor Bourne to give a time when they'd be able to train.

And that's it for this meeting. All that's left in saying now, is Thank You, for your dedication to the Medical subdivision!

Highlights from 2008-10-18 Medical Staff Meeting

Here are the highlights from our Medical staff meeting this past Saturday, October 18th:

  • Dr. Angelis Bourne reported that Engineering is working on a shuttle for the MERSI project that they hope to have completed soon. Several members from Medical have volunteered for the project, as have some members from other divisions. If you are interested in the project, please contact Dr. Bourne.

  • We discussed clinic hours and the sign-up calendar emailed to each member as a Google doc. This list will be re-sent. Hours currently are Tuesday evenings from 7-10pm SLT and Sunday mornings 10-1pm SLT. During that time, please use the general GFC chat channel to announce that the clinic is staffed for recruit exams as well as medical rp's if anyone is so inclined. Please make the anouncement 2-4/hour depending on the level of activity. If you become too busy, please announce that medical rp's are being halted for the time and that only recruit exams will be conducted. Remember, our first priority is recruit exams! In addition, if you ever want to run impromptu clinic, that is also fine. Use the general GFC chat channel to announce just as you would during scheduled clinic.

  • Dr. Shyshy Mayako (Ens.) has written a new course to be added to the GFC Academy curriculum, "Legends of Starfleet Medicine," and is working on 2 pharmacology classes. Dr. Deej Kasshiki (LTjg) has completed a comprehensive physiology course and is working to break it into smaller teaching units to make the learning experience better for both students and instructors. All Medical staff personnel are encouraged to develop courses if they have an interest, and not just on a medical topic. The Academy is always looking to add new courses and new instructors. If you have any questions or would like to explore possible topics, please contact Dr. Juran or Dr. Akina.

A HUGE "THANK YOU!!!!" to Dr. Hermione Seesaw (Ens.) for designing and building our new conference table in the medical center. As you can see in both pictures from our meeting, it is both functional AND beautiful, with plenty of much-needed seating!

  • Hearty thanks also to the many Medical Division team members who showed up for the Recruiting Event (sponsored by the Activities sub-division) held from 1200-1600 SLT, prior to our staff meeting. It was an excellent time to get to know each other better and a good opportunity for team-building. As always, you showed your commitment to excellence and dedication!

Update on course update

Since posting the course development update, I've spoken with Dr. Deej Kasshiki and, after some discussion, we decided that rather than try to fit a single course in physiology within the time constraints of roughly an hour, Dr. Kasshiki is going to break it into smaller units. This will give leeway for creativity and material covered that otherwise would have to be omitted. Hopefully this will make the material more meaningful to students, and in the end, that's the ultimate goal.

Your comments are appreciated by both of us.

Su4an Nightfire home from hospital (rl)

Received a very brief IM from Su4an Nightfire today (October 12) saying she had just come home from the hospital. As many of you know, she's been sick for a number of weeks now, which is why she hasn't been at Medical. Please feel free to leave her an IM if you are so inclined.

Update on classes in development

Just to let everyone know, we currently have 2 new medical classes almost completed and ready to be presented to the Academy for addition to the course list. A physiology course has been developed by Dr. Deej Kasshiki and a course on the history of Star Trek medical officers has been written by Dr. Shyshy Mayako. Dr. Mayako has begun work on a new course as well. If you have any ideas for courses or have thought of developing a course yourself, please post it here or contact me personally.

Here are the highlights from the last Medical Staff Meeting held in the McCoy-Troi Medical Center:

  • Please pass along your email to Dr Akina if you have not done so to be added to the access list for clinic hours sign-up. But this is the best way to share documents that is available, so thank you in advance for setting up one more.)

  • Dr. Angelis Bourne continues to work on the MERSI project (Medical Emergency Rescue Service Initiative). He is working on rp's to involve other Fleet personnel and across sims (within GFC). Please contact him if you are interested in joining his team. There is also a thread started for ideas and comments on the MERSI project on this blog so please share your thoughts!

  • If you know of someone who used to be active in Medical and is no longer, please have them contact Dr. Akina to let her know of their status. We have extended the census time period but will be closing it soon.

Ideas for classes at GFC Academy

As you know, I have recently accepted the appointment of Dean of Health Sciences, succeeding Dr. Deej Kasshiki. We have two new courses in the final stages of development and hopefully both will be added to the GFC Academy curriculum. I would like to ask you for suggestions for potential new class topics, as well as changes you feel would make Medical 101 a better class. Please use this thread to reply or IM me. I'd like to see some discussion among our team on these topics, so please consider using this thread. Thank you in advance for your contributions.

Hypospray,Medkit, Supply Cabinet, and Replicator Thread

Use this thread to post any questions or comments you have about the new hypospray and medkits, supply cabinets, and replicators provided to the Medical Division by Dr. Da5id Weatherwax.

Again, many thanks to Dr. Weatherwax for his dedication and contribution to the Medical Division!!!

Highlights from 2008-09-20 Medical Staff Meeting

The following are highlights from our Medical Staff Meeting held on September 20, 2008, at the McCoy-Troi Medical Center:

  • Dr. Da5id Weatherwax has devoted time and energy to developing a new scripted medkit and a new scripted hypospray for all of us on the Medical team. If you have not received one, please contact Dr. Juran, Dr. Weatherwax, or me.

  • There is a supply cabinet in the main ward and in the the therapeutic ward where you can re-supply your hypospray. We also have a replicator in the main lab and in intensive care. Both supply cabinet and replicator work in the same way: right-click and select Touch; both will ask you what medication you want.

  • Standard and alternative are the two choices for the hypospray refills, with standard being the six drugs discussed in Medical 101 and alternate will be the same plus safer options such as adrenaline which can be used in furries or hybrids. The cabinets re-supply every hour, but the replicators have unlimited quantities

  • As a reminder, the six medications covered in Medical 101 are:
  • Cordrazine
A powerful stimulant. Useful for waking unconscious patients, or as a general stimulant to keep patients awake. To be given in SMALL doses only as overdose can cause cardiac problems.

    Netinaline
A less powerful stimulant used to revive unconscious patients.

    Dexalin
Used to treat patients suffering from oxygen deprivation. Replacement for the older tri-ox compound.

    Hyronalin
Synthetic drug used to treat radiation sickness in humanoids, also given as an immunization prior to exposure to radiation. Replaced adrenaline which was used prior to its discovery.
NOTE: DO NOT ADMINISTER THIS DRUG TO FURRIES as it can result in severe allergic reactions. Use Adrenaline instead.

    Sterilite
Anti-infective agent used during surgery and in the general treatment of wounds to produce rapid death of harmful microorganisms and parasitic agents.

    Anesthezine
A general anesthetic. Fatal if present in the air in high concentrations. Used in most starships intruder defense systems.

  • Medkits accept refills from the supply points and they can hold 5 refills. If you are not wearing the medkit when you try to draw supply, it will not be refilled. The medkits can resupply the hypospray and the hypospray only holds one refill.

  • There is an instruction card with the medkit and hypospray; please take time to read them.

  • VERY IMPORTANT: THIS IS FOR MEDICAL DIVISION MEMBERS ONLY. We do NOT want to see these available grid-wide. If you happen to get one that has full perms, PLEASE SET IT TO NOMOD BEFORE PASSING IT ALONG TO ANOTHER TEAM MEMBER.

  • For Medical 101 instructors, there is a hypospray training simulator available. It works the same way but only simulates an injection.

  • This is, to our best knowledge, the most sophisticated rp scripted hypospray in SL. Our thanks go to Dr. Weatherwax for his work to create these items and enhance the experience in Medical and rp's.

  • Since everyone was not at the meeting to hear Dr. Weatherwax, I am going to start a new thread on our blog dedicated to the new items. If you have questions or suggestions, please post in that thread.

  • Angelis Bourne continues to work on the MERSI project and has been in contact with Engineering and is working on a medical emergency simulation that would involve a building collapsing and a large number of injuries. Ideally this would involve a large number of Fleet personnel. We also discussed other possibilities for Medical rp's that are not necessarily emergencies. Please pass along any ideas you may have to Angelis via IM, notecard, or in our blog.

  • FADM Katrina Bixby attended our meeting and reported that one of our members has created a device that allows for sim-to-sim transport within the Galaxy regions. This means that when it is officially operational, it will make it very easy to transport people directly to the Medical Center. This will also enhance our rp capabilities.

Highlights from 2008-08-23 Medical/Counseling Staff Meeting

Our meeting was held at the home of Angelis Bourne and Aurora Goldkey. Many thanks for their hospitality!

  • New clinic hours begin this week on Tuesday, August 26th. Clinic days will be Tuesday evenings from 7pm SLT until 10pm SLT, and Sunday mornings from 10am SLT until 1pm SLT. Volunteers from Medical and Counseling will staff the hours. A sign-up sheet has been created and will be made available by Monday. A notecard with an announcement that can be posted on the GFC chat will be sent out to both teams. Please post at least a couple of times an hour.

  • The new MERCY (Medical Emergency Response Crew Yawl) will also begin functioning soon and we hope this will also encourage more rp opportunities.

  • Due to the posting restrictions on the new GFC website and needing a medium to communicate within and between Medical/Counseling on a regular basis, it was decided to start a blog for this purpose. A big "Thank You" to LCDR RoBobby McMillan for getting us set up with our new blog! We decided to name the blog "MTMC News" to stand for McCoy-Troi Medical Center News. Meeting highlights, information, news, announcements, and so on will be posted in this location. Ideas, suggestions, comments are all welcomed.

  • The MTMC Blog is intended for use ONLY by members from Medical and Counseling.

  • FLAMING IS FORBIDDEN/VERBOTTEN, as is whining.

Next meeting will be September 6th at 4:30pm SLT.
